“Many of Rolando Chang Barreros paintings lean toward the literal and visually complex, particularly his more overtly political and frankly homoerotic pieces and even his stylized portraits.  His series paintings, in contrast, dispense with anatomical accuracy and specificity and employ a single motif repeatedly, reducing figures almost to glyphs.  In their broad strokes, child-like simplicity, and whimsy, these paintings have an affinity with the work of Paul Klee.  Like Klee, Barrero jettisons realism intentionally, freeing himself not only from its technical constraints but also from the primacy of material reality.  The simplicity of the surface belies the multiplicity of layers beneath.”
(excerpt from essay by Nan Runde for exhibition catalogue)
